How to Protect Customer Data When Building a Website or App
Any service storing customer names, messages, or orders has a responsibility to protect that information. Security is not a final launch checklist item: it belongs in design, implementation, and ongoing operations.
1. Protect connections with HTTPS
TLS helps safeguard data in transit between the client and the server. It does not automatically prevent application vulnerabilities or replace the need for system updates.
2. Apply least privilege
Every employee and user should receive only the permissions required for their task. Enforce authorization on the server for each operation. Hiding a button in the frontend is not a security control.
3. Secure accounts
Never store plaintext passwords. Use a password-specific hashing approach such as Argon2id. Consider multifactor authentication for sensitive accounts and provide secure recovery and login-abuse protections.
4. Address common vulnerabilities
Threats include SQL injection, cross-site scripting, and broken access control. Use parameterized queries, context-aware output encoding, input validation, and explicit authorization checks. OWASP guidance is a valuable reference for engineering and testing.
5. Maintain recoverable backups
Keep protected backups and regularly test restoration. A backup that has never been restored may fail when it matters most. Document recovery responsibilities and priorities.
6. Minimize personal data
Collect only what the service needs, define retention and deletion periods, explain data use clearly, and consider applicable data protection requirements in the markets you serve.
Conclusion
Customer data protection combines sound engineering with permissions, monitoring, backups, and operational policy. Building these practices in early reduces risk and supports long-term trust.
